What happens when you quit nicotine

A timeline of the real changes in your body when you quit vaping, smoking or nicotine pouches — from the first 20 minutes to a full year. Every claim is linked to a source, because health writing that isn't cited isn't worth much.

This timeline follows quitting a vape or cigarettes, where the effects are best studied. If you use pouches or dip, the app shows you an oral-health version instead (gums, taste, blood pressure). Everyone's different, so treat the timings as a guide, not a promise — and know that the first few days of withdrawal are the hardest part, and they pass.

After 20 minutes

Heart rate starts to settle

Nicotine is a stimulant — it pushes your heart rate and blood pressure up with every hit. Within about 20 minutes of your last one, both start easing back toward normal.

After 12 hours

The nicotine has cleared

Nicotine's half-life is about two hours, so within a day it's essentially gone from your body. The restlessness and short fuse of the first day are withdrawal — real, and they pass.

After 2 days

Taste and smell sharpen

Nicotine dulls the nerve endings behind taste and smell. Within a couple of days they start to recover, and food begins tasting like more.

After 3 days

Breathing feels easier

As nicotine leaves, your airways relax rather than staying constricted. Around three days in, a lot of people notice deeper, easier breaths — and the worst of the withdrawal is behind them.

After 2 weeks

Circulation improves

Over the first couple of weeks, blood flow improves and moving around starts to feel less like hard work.

After 1 month

The cough starts to clear

If you vaped or smoked, the tiny hairs (cilia) that sweep your airways clean begin working again. Coughing, congestion and shortness of breath ease over the first month or so.

After 3 months

Lung function climbs

Measured lung function can improve meaningfully over the first few months off — one of the more concrete things you can actually feel.

After 9 months

Less coughing, more wind

By around nine months the cilia have largely recovered. Coughing, sinus congestion and breathlessness drop, and your lungs are better at fighting off infection.

After 1 year

Your heart eases up

A year without nicotine's daily strain lets the cardiovascular system settle. For former smokers, the excess risk of heart disease is roughly halved by this point.

This is general information, not medical advice. Everyone's body is different, and none of this is a diagnosis or a treatment plan. The first few days of nicotine withdrawal can be genuinely hard — if you're struggling, a doctor or pharmacist can talk you through options like patches or gum.

Watch it happen, day by day.

Nicotine Free shows this timeline against your own progress — the next marker you're heading for, and the date it lands on — alongside your streak, money saved, and the puffs or pouches you didn't have. Pick your thing at setup and the timeline matches it. Private, no account.
